Today it was announced that Peyton Manning will be signing with the Denver Broncos as their new Quarterback. This has raised quite the buzz on all social media outlets. I even posted an update to my personal Facebook Profile about the news. The interesting thing about it though, is that the buzz isn’t so much about Peyton Manning or even the Denver Broncos really, it’s mostly about Tim Tebow. The quarterback that took social media by storm this past season has done it again.
He is trending on Twitter, Facebook, and everything else.
It’s a classic case of popularity. People want to know where he’s going and what his future looks like in the NFL. Tim Tebow is not the best quarterback, as we saw last season but people seem to LOVE him. He’s got a charm that appeals to Internet users everywhere. This might not be the best thing for whatever team he goes to. Let’s say for instance that he goes to the New England Patriots. He would undoubtedly be the backup quarterback for Tom Brady, the three time Super Bowl Champion. With such a large social media presence and so many fans though, drama will follow. The next trending topic would be about putting Tebow in the game instead of Brady which by performance, doesn’t make sense at all. This is great for Tim Tebow. He will have a massive following no matter what happens and wherever he goes, it will cause quite a stir in the world of social media.
This is just today’s example of how social media has such a strong influence in so many events, issues, and people in the public eye. If I were the quarterback for any team in the NFL right now, I’d start building my social media presence for fear of being replaced by Tim Tebow and his many million followers, no matter how good he is.
